Teeth Whitening: Getting That Lovely Smile Back

All of us would love to have pearly white teeth that dazzle the people around us when we smile. Unfortunately, not all of us have the perfect set of teeth. In most cases, our lifestyle does not really help us keep healthy and free from blemishes.Good thing that there are many teeth whitening methods that can bring back the luster and beauty of our teeth without really costing us a fortune. In fact, there is good number of affordable and effective teeth whitening products that you can readily buy in supermarkets and drugstores without a prescription.

Teeth Whitening Toothpastes

One of the most affordable and widely used teeth whitening agent is the toothpaste. According to experts, whitening toothpastes can help lighten the color of your teeth by about one shade. The good thing about using teeth whitening toothpaste is that most of these types of toothpaste do not contain any bleaching agents that may cause some irritations to the gums.

If you one of those people who are very sensitive to products that contains hydrogen peroxide which is commonly used as a bleaching agent for teeth, you can feel safe with most whitening toothpastes. Furthermore, whitening toothpastes do not really cost as much as the other types of teeth whitening products. However, since teeth whitening toothpaste usually does not contain bleach, it can only remove surface stains.

Whitening Strips and Gels

Peroxide based strips and gels can be purchased over the counter. By applying these products directly into your teeth, your teeth can become one to two shades lighter. To achieve the best results, you must use these products for a certain period of time. In some cases, you need to use these products for about 14 days up to 4 months depending on the degree of discoloration in your teeth. Since these products are peroxide based, some experts cautioned against their use especially if you have sensitive gums.

In-Office Whitening

Seeking professional help is the best way for you to have pearly white teeth. Over the counter breaching gels and whitening toothpastes may be good but there is really nothing more effective than having your teeth treated by a professional. Always remember that whitening gels and toothpaste do not have a long lasting effect. Besides, you need to use the product repeatedly for a period of time before you can actually notice some difference in the color of your teeth. On, the other hand, an in-office teeth whitening process may give you that pearly white you dreamed of is just a few minutes. What is more interesting about in-office bleaching procedure that is administered by your dentist is that its effect usually last a long time.

Basics Of Tooth Whitening

Tip! Before deciding on a tooth whitening product, it is a good idea to consult your oral health care professional. He or she will tell you which options are the best for you and your teeth.

For people who want a smile that is brighter, the process of tooth whitening can be easily administered. Tooth whitening can reduce staining and discoloration and ultimately grant a patient a whiter and brighter set of teeth.

But how much really can your teeth become whiter? Some tooth whitening products claim that your teeth can become nine shades whiter. This is exaggerating. A whitening of two or three shades is more possible and can already provide a significant change in a person’s smile.

It is important to note at this point that our teeth have no uniform whiteness. Usually, the whitest teeth are the two front teeth while molars are generally two shades darker. A realistic goal for anyone wishing to have a whiter set of teeth is for the process to achieve its optimum level while retaining the natural look of white teeth. Besides, the whitening results vary from patient to patient depending on the teeth structure and procedure type.

Tip! 4) Tooth whitening strips: These strips are placed on the teeth and are removed after 30 minutes. These are very effective and are recommended.

But first, what causes tooth discoloration? Remember that aging, chemical damage and staining are factors that contribute to discoloration as are medications, tea, coffee, cola soft drinks and cigarette.

There are also other factors that affect the color of teeth like genetics and disease. Some people have naturally whiter teeth enamel and their children can acquire this gene trait. But if you suspect that there’s a physiological factor behind the color of your teeth, it is best to consult your physician too so you can better inform your dentist.

Teeth whitening corrects the discoloration in your teeth by removing the staining on your teeth. And there are a number of methods or techniques that can be used to achieve this such as the following: mild acid whitening, chemical whitening, abrasive teeth whitening and the latest one: laser teeth whitening.

Tip! Only professional whitening procedures such as the custom tray bleaching can remove both internal and external stains. Over-the-counter tooth whitening products like toothpastes only remove the external stains.

Teeth bleaching is a chemical process that a dentist can use to lighten up the color of the teeth of his patient. The process can be administered right in the dentist’s clinic, at the patient’s home or a combination of clinic first-finish at home. Home teeth bleaching procedures are more common nowadays these afford patients the convenience of their own homes.

The cosmetic dentist first molds a custom mouth tray or mouth guard for his patient. Creating the mouth tray is critical because this controls the amount of whitening agent to be used and holds the entire teeth for even whitening. Other material requirements for the home procedure are fairly easy to handle. The dentists should make sure that the patient is well-instructed and well-equipped. While treating at home, never hesitate to call your dentist if you have questions or is not sure of what you’re doing.

Typically, the mouthguard containing the whitening solution must be worn overnight or as instructed by your dentist and/or recommended by the product literature. The session could also last for as short as 2 or 3 hours. This really depends in the product and your own whitening need.

Tooth Whitening Kits

Before the days of tooth whitening kits, we had to go to the dentist to have our teeth bleached - like having your hair dyed by a hairdresser, or getting your nails done. Now, there are over the counter products available for a do-it-yourself teeth bleaching job. But, like bleaching your own hair, there are risks to skipping the expense of having a professional do it. Select your bleaching product with care.

Some tooth whitening gel is applied to the surface of the teeth and left on overnight. This type of product often contains alcohol or glycerin because you need it to dry quickly once it is applied to your teeth - after all, the mouth is a wet place and if the product does not dry before you close your mouth, some of it will get rubbed off by your lips and tongue. There are two problems with these tooth whitening kits. One is that you may indeed rub some of the gel off, resulting in a patchy bleaching job. The other is that substances like alcohol can have a drying effect on all the tissues of the mouth, and this will contribute to bad breath.

Tip! Only professional whitening procedures such as the custom tray bleaching can remove both internal and external stains. Over-the-counter tooth whitening products like toothpastes only remove the external stains.

Other tooth whitening kits use bleaching strips that are applied to the teeth. These stay on reliably, but often do not contact the entire surface of the tooth - the indented surfaces between the teeth don’t get bleached while the fronts of the teeth do. This can result in an odd visual effect that is probably not what you want. Depending on the brand and your teeth, you may get satisfactory results with tooth whitening gel and other kits, but you may also get a less that stellar result.

The best tooth whitening gel is one that is applied to the teeth by covering them with a form-fitting tray full of whitening agent. This bathes all surfaces of the tooth in the bleach. The product should contain neither alcohol nor glycerin. Effective bleaching agents usually contain a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide. Clean your teeth thoroughly before using the treatment, and leave the tray on for the time specified in the tooth whitening kits instructions. If you use the right kit, you should get good results without doing any harm to your mouth

Tip! Before deciding on a tooth whitening product, it is a good idea to consult your oral health care professional. He or she will tell you which options are the best for you and your teeth.
